Why Tbilisi?

Tbilisi is the vibrant, affordable, and safe capital of Georgia — a city where ancient sulfur baths sit beside contemporary art galleries, and $5 buys you a feast. For international students, it offers an exceptional quality of life at a fraction of Western European costs.

Getting Around

Tbilisi has a clean and efficient Metro (2 lines), bus network, and minibus ("marshrutka") system. A single ride costs 1 GEL (~$0.36). A monthly travel card costs just 38 GEL (~$14). Bolt and Yandex taxi apps are widely used and very cheap — a 15-min ride rarely exceeds $3.

Food & Dining

  • Georgian cuisine: Khinkali (dumplings), Khachapuri (cheese bread), Mtsvadi (grilled meat) — filling meals from $3–$7.
  • Dezertirebi Market: Fresh vegetables, fruits, spices, and dairy at wholesale prices — a student favourite.
  • Supermarkets: Goodwill, Carrefour, and Fresco for everyday groceries.
  • Campus canteens: Most university canteens offer hot meals for $2–$4.
  • International food: Arabic, Indian, Chinese, and Italian restaurants are plentiful and affordable ($5–$15).

Student Social Life

Tbilisi has a rich and diverse cultural scene. As a student you'll have access to:

  • Dozens of free museums and galleries (National Museum entry ~$2)
  • A thriving café culture — specialty coffee shops everywhere
  • International student clubs and associations at every major university
  • Weekly language exchange meetups (Georgian, English, Arabic, and more)
  • Live music venues and a legendary electronic music scene (Bassiani, Café Gallery)

Climate & Nature

Tbilisi enjoys a continental climate: warm summers (25–35°C) and mild winters (0–10°C, occasional snow). Within 1–3 hours you can reach:

  • Gudauri ski resort (1.5 hrs)
  • Kazbegi / Mt. Kazbek trekking (2.5 hrs)
  • Batumi Black Sea beach (4.5 hrs)
  • Kakheti wine region (1.5 hrs)

Healthcare

Georgia has a mixed public/private healthcare system. International students are advised to purchase health insurance. Major hospitals like Medicalcenter and Aversi Clinic offer English-speaking staff. A GP visit typically costs $15–$30 without insurance.

Internet & Tech

Georgia has one of the fastest internet speeds in the region. Magti, Geocell, and Beeline offer affordable SIM plans with unlimited data from $10–$20/month. Free Wi-Fi is available in most cafés, universities, and public spaces.

Banking & Money

TBC Bank and Bank of Georgia are the main banks with English-language apps and international ATM access. Opening a student bank account is straightforward with your passport and residence registration. Wise and Revolut are popular for international transfers.
